WestJet is currently looking to fill Flight Dispatch positions for our De Havilland Dash 8-400 fleet. Our Flight Dispatchers are responsible for safe and efficient operational control of all flights, in conjunction with the Captain, across an expansive network serviced by a fleet of De Havilland Dash 8-400, Boeing 787, 737NG and 737-MAX aircraft.


*Note: We operate 24/7/365 days per year. Successful candidates will be scheduled days/evenings/weekends and statutory holidays to support the operation.

Job Description:

  • Exercise safe and efficient operational control over flights in conjunction with the Pilot-in-command and in accordance with all Canadian and foreign regulations, and WestJet and WestJet Encore policies and procedures;
  • Analyze operational information including forecast and actual weather conditions, NOTAM, runway and aerodrome suitability, navigation aids, communications, en-route facilities and other constraints which may affect the controlling flight;
  • Flight planning, including route analysis and calculation of fuel requirements;
  • Formulate, authorize, and issue operational flight plans for flights;
  • Review, revise and communicate changes to the operational flight plan to the Pilot in Command as required;
  • Ensure that flight plans have been properly filed and amended with the appropriate ATC facility as required;
  • Maintain Flight Watch over all flights within the sector of operation;
  • Provide flight crew briefings;
  • Coordinate all aircraft MEL and maintenance limitations with Maintenance Control;
  • Coordinate airport curfew extension approvals as required by local airport authorities;
  • Communicate information pertaining to irregular operations to the Lead Flight Dispatcher and Commercial Operations as required;
  • Recommend flight delays or cancellations to the Lead Flight Dispatcher and Commercial Operations as required.

Here is what we are looking for:

  • Successful completion of the Transport Canada Flight Dispatch Generic Examinations (FDOPS and FDMET) required;
  • Valid Radio Telephone Operator’s Certificate restricted- Aeronautical;
  • Minimum 21 years of age as required by Transport Canada;
  • One year flight dispatch experience in a (CARS 705) Type A or B operational control system is preferred;
  • Related experience within a Flight Operations Department is an asset;
  • Demonstrated good working knowledge of general computer and soft ware applications;
  • Demonstrated success multi -tasking during high pressure situations in a fast-paced dynamic environment;
  • Proven ability to work independently and with minimal supervision;
  • Demonstrated excellence in prioritization and organization;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with past success establishing respect and credibility through actions;
  • Proven ability to communicate in a clear, accurate, concise and professional manner;
  • Proven can do, entrepreneurial spirit;
  • FAA Dispatch License is an asset;
  • Commercial Pilot License is an asset;
  • Flight Service Specialist experience is an asset.
