NAV CANADA is hiring a Data Transcription Summer Student to join our Chief Technology Office! As a Summer Student, you will improve your skills and gain valuable on-the-job work experience while enabling exciting research initiatives. As an organization focused on collaboration and teamwork, we provide opportunities for students to share ideas and perspectives.
The Data Transcription Summer Student will be working on a team with technology specialists to help develop a valuable set of data that will be used for research purposes. The work will involve transcribing specialized aviation audio recordings and documenting metadata related to data quality and other attributes. Through this experience, the student will gain insight into how pilots and air traffic controllers communicate, developing their understanding of aviation phraseology and operations.

As a Data Transcription Summer Student, you will work alongside technology specialists to develop high-quality datasets for research and development purposes. Your work will involve transcribing specialized aviation audio recordings, annotating key data points, and documenting metadata related to data quality and other attributes. Your contributions will help shape advancements in aviation technology and research.
This role involves:
- Transcribing specialized aviation audio recordings with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Annotating and labeling data to enhance its usability for research purposes.
- Cross-referencing transcribed audio with standards and documentation to ensure accuracy.
- Identifying and flagging potential issues with audio recordings or transcriptions.
- Assisting in refining transcription and labeling processes to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Contributing to documentation that supports data usage and research initiatives.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Effective communication skills (both verbal and written).
- Great organizational skills, be details-oriented, and dependable.
- Must be a team player.
Programs and Level:
- High school, College, or university student.
Work Environment:
- The work is performed during weekdays in an office environment in Ottawa.
- The work term is 4 months: from May 2025 to August 2025.
Knowledge & Abilities
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to transcribe and label audio data consistently according to established guidelines.
- Comfortable working with digital tools for transcription and annotation
- Ability to work independently and provide status updates and progress reports
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to search, analyze, and apply information from provided resources and publicly available sources.
- Ability to identify issues and inefficiencies and suggest improvements to enhance transcription and data labelling process.
Language Requirements
- English and French are required for transcriptions in both official languages.
Experience
- Academic or work experience with Microsoft tools such as Excel and Word.
- Previous academic or work experience in aviation is considered an asset.
- Experience working within an office environment is considered an asset.

- This is 5 days a week onsite role located at the Technical Services Centre, 280 Hunt Club Rd, Ottawa, ON.
