Northrop Grummans Missions Systems sector is seeking a Materials/Principal Material Processes Engineer, specializing in issues related to metallic materials in electronic assemblies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Processes of interest include, low and high temperature soldering, brazing, welding, wire bonding, heat treating, corrosion, and plating. Components of interest include structural components, liquid-cooled heat exchange assemblies, ceramic/hermetic packages and printed wiring boards. Duties include design of hardware, manufacturing support, and failure analysis. Typical duties include approximately equal amounts of time in the laboratory and communicating results to customers orally or by written reports. The incumbent is expected to interact directly with internal and external customers and work well in small teams. The incumbent is expected to lead RCCA investigations and provide recommendations to the Program team. The incumbent is expected to be the Materials Lead on new programs, making recommendations for materials to be used in various environments for various designs. This role offers work arrangement flexibility with 1-2 days/week remote and 3-5 days/week onsite.
This position may be filled as a Materials Process Engineer or Principal Materials Process Engineer.
This position is contingent upon the ability to obtain and maintain an active DoD Secret Clearance or the transferal of an active DoD Secret Clearance
Basic Qualifications for Materials Process Engineer
Applicants should have either a degree in Materials Science/Engineering or Metallurgy, or a degree in a physical science or engineering field combined with practical experience with Materials Science/Engineering or Metallurgy.
Bachelor’s Degree with 2 years of relevant work experience, OR Master’s Degree with 0 years of relevant work experience, Will consider additional 4 years of applied experience in lieu of degree requirements.
Knowledgeable in metals joining (soldering, brazing, welding) corrosion, and electronic packaging materials.
Knowledge of properties and processing of aluminum alloy parts by additive manufacturing is highly desired. Knowledge of qualifying suppliers to produce metals additive manufactured parts is also desired.
Familiar with SEM (SE&BSE), EDS, FIB, X-ray and Acoustic Microscopy imaging techniques as well as metallographic methods

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with electronic assemblies and a demonstrated record of solving problems related to metals in electronic assemblies, is desirable
• Familiarity with industry and government specifications related to testing and performance of metal alloys and additive manufactured metal alloys, is desired
• Experience testing and reviewing metals joining performance data in accordance with internal and industry specifications
• Experience working with external suppliers
Knowledge in organic and inorganic coating systems (such as conversion coatings, anodize coatings, plating, paint, and sealants), friction stir welding (FSW), and non-destructive inspection techniques are an added bonus

This positions standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
Salary Range: $75,700 - $113,500
Salary Range 2: $93,000 - $139,600
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidates experience, education, skills and current spanet conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
