What Will You Do

The Hot Section Engineering (HSE) Mechanical Design team is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to design and develop the next generation of military jet engines, preferably with gas turbine Combustor or Diffuser Case experience. In this role, the candidate will be required to work onsite and maintain a US Government Security Clearance at the Secret Level or higher.

The senior mechanical designer will work directly with the other disciplines of the Integrated Product Team (IPT), including project, structures, aero-thermal, and product definition, to design, analyze and deliver development engine hardware in support of development engine testing. The senior mechanical designer will also interface with other HSE IPTs and P&W groups to ensure designs meet system level requirements and enable test objectives. Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the resolution of mechanical engineering problems of difficult and complex scope, seeking a balanced system solution, and ensuring engineering excellence.
  • Establish and maintain trust with internal and external customers by executing tasks with robust technical solutions.
  • Generate innovative & technically sound design solutions that meet the system metrics and the objectives of the test engines; and facilitate the delivery of the development hardware to the test engines on schedule.
  • Review and approval of product definition data (prints and models).
  • Utilize standard work and CORE tools to continuously improve the design process.
  • Present and communicate results to customers and program management.
  • Guide and mentor entry level engineers.Up to 10 travel.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)
  • 5 years of engineering experience, 3 years with an advanced degree
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Understanding of hardware, blueprints, dimensions & tolerances, and manufacturing methods.
  • Experience with GD&T ASME Y14.5M 1994 or 2018
  • Gas Turbine Combustor and/or Diffuser Case design experience
  • Proficiency in Teamcenter, Siemens NX, ANSYS, and classical methods of analysis
  • Experience with Model-Based Design, Manufacture and Inspection (MB-DMI)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail and deadlines
  • Understanding of Agile project management principles and experience working within an agile framework
  • Active US Government Security Clearance at a Secret Level or higher
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a consistent record of collaboration, innovation, and initiative (added)
  • Experience with MS Office products

Hot Section Engineering (HSE)

Hot Section Engineering is responsible for the design, development, technology maturation and in service support of all diffuser cases, combustors, turbines (vanes, blades, rotors and cases), augmenters (military), nozzles and associated fuel systems for all military, commercial and industrial engine models and radial auxiliary power units.

Technical disciplines in HSE include Project Engineering, Mechanical Design, Structural Analysis, Durability and Product Definition.

What is my role type?

Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance workers, as they are essential to the development of our engines.

Candidates will learn more about role type and current site status throughout the recruiting process. For onsite and hybrid roles, commuting to and from the assigned site is the employee’s personal responsibility.

The salary range for this role is 82,000 USD - 164,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
