Stress Engineering Analyst
Job Description:

De Havilland Aircraft of Canada seeks skilled Stress Engineering Analysts to support design and certification of both new and existing aircraft programs. Successful candidates will be chosen from a range of experience requirements and preferred qualifications -- from 10+ years in aerospace stress engineering roles, to 5+ years with advanced graduate degrees in aircraft structural analysis. All candidates will demonstrate proficiency in classical stressing methods, FEA, and other industry-standard analysis techniques. Experience with fatigue and damage tolerance of metallic structures is preferred. Knowledge of composite materials and additive manufacturing is an asset.

This role offers the opportunity to work on high-impact programs, where analytical excellence and engineering judgment are key to ensuring the structural integrity, safety, and regulatory compliance of De Havilland’s aircraft.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct classical stress analysis for static, fatigue, and damage tolerance for metallic and non-metallic components.
  • Assess aircraft structures including fuselage, wing, empennage, nacelle, powerplant mounting, landing gear attachment, and cabin interiors.
  • Develop detailed and coarse-global finite element models (DFEM and GFEM) to support structural design.
  • Prepare and review engineering documentation, including stress reports and regulatory compliance plans.
  • Support structural testing by evaluating strength-stiffness requirements and developing appropriate test strategies.
  • Collaborate with related engineering disciplines (Design, Loads & Dynamics, Materials & Processes, Experimental & Test, and Liaison Engineering) to ensure structural integrity and manufacturability of designs.
  • Support certification efforts with regulatory agencies (TCCA, FAA, EASA), including coordination with Design Approval Representatives (DARs) and similar delegates.
  • Develop and maintain analysis tools, templates, and best practices for stress calculations.
  • Provide mentorship and technical leadership to junior engineers and analysts.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, with 10+ years of progressive experience in aerospace structural analysis
  • Consideration may be given to candidates with 5+ years experience in aircraft stress analysis, and Master’s/PhD or equivalent in relevant aircraft structural topics.
  • Proficient in classical stress analysis, with knowledge of aircraft design principles and industry-standard aerospace methodologies, as applicable to metallic and composite structures (Bruhn, Niu, Roark, etc.).
  • Expertise in FEM tools such as NASTRAN, Patran, HyperMesh, FEMAP, or ANSYS.
  • Comfortable using spreadsheets, scripting (e.g. VBA, MATLAB, Python or similar), and custom calculation tools.
  • Understanding of certification requirements, including fatigue and damage tolerance criteria, per CAR 525 / 14-CFR Part 25 / CS-25 Transport Category aircraft regulations.
  • Experience preparing substantiation reports, and interacting with certification authorities and their delegates.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with De Havilland aircraft is preferred.
  • Strong consideration will be given to demonstrable experience in DFEM and GFEM modelling (mesh refinement, identifying reasonable boundary conditions, and results interpretation).
  • Experience in dynamic FEA is an asset.
  • Strong consideration will be given to applicants also familiar with CAR 523 / 14-CFR Part 23 / CS-23 Normal Category aircraft regulations.
  • Experience with design of large fuselage cutouts is preferred.
  • Past involvement in repair evaluation, production support (e.g. exercising MRB authority) is preferred.
  • Experience in structures-systems integration is preferred, e.g. in relation to flight control systems, powerplant, landing gear.
  • Knowledge of related aerospace disciplines (e.g. loads & dynamics, stability & control, materials & processes) is an asset.
  • Experience in design of composite structures, classical laminate analysis, and additive manufacturing is an asset.
  • Knowledge of PLM systems (e.g. ENOVIA, SmarTeam) and configuration control processes is an asset.
