Job Summary
The Machinist/ Toolmaker is responsible for setting up and operating conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts. The Machinist/ Toolmaker will also fabricate prototype parts, and alter production parts for testing from drawings, blueprints, and sketches using various types of equipment.

Essential Job Functions

•tStudy blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.

•tMeasure, span, and scribe dimensions and reference points on materials or work pieces as guides for subsequent machining.

•tSelect, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.

•tCalculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

•tStart and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, adjusting machine controls or control media as required.

•tVerify conformance of finished work piece to specifications.

•tSet up and operate the machine on a trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.

•tFit and assemble parts into complete assemblies.

•tVerify the dimensions and alignment of assemblies.

•tInstall machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and test the operation of units to ensure functionality and performance.

•tOperate welding equipment to cut or weld parts.

•tConfer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems and discuss potential and current fabricating problems as it relates to prototype work.

•tIdentify and acquire materials for required parts.

•tSupport production equipment in critical situations.

•tProduce finished machined parts and modify existing parts as required according to engineering specifications and drawings.

•tResponsible for supporting the Engineering Group in the fabrication of prototype parts and altering production parts for testing from drawings, blueprints, and sketches using various types of equipment.

•tPerform various other duties including but not limited to training, administration, and housekeeping, and ensure quality, quantity, and timeliness of the product or service provided.

•tOther duties as required.
Job Requirements:

Education/Experience

•\tHigh school diploma, vocational training, and/or apprenticeship program.

•\tApprenticeship papers with 2-4 years of experience or 10 years tool and die experience. Must know how to set up and operate lathes, mills, drill presses, and grinders.

•\t5+ years' experience working in a metal fabrication shop, preferred.

•\t5+ years' experience in an assembly shop, preferred.

•\t5+ years' experience in the operation of machine shop equipment including manual lathes, mills, grinders, etc., preferred.

•\t5+ years' CNC Milling experience, preferred.

•\t5+ years' experience inspecting with various precision metrology instruments, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•\tProficient in setting up and operating conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers.

•\tSkilled in interpreting blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and specifications for machining tasks.

•\tExperienced in operating various machining equipment including lathes, mills, grinders, and CNC Milling machines.

•\tCompetent in measuring, spaning, and scribing dimensions on materials or work pieces, with expertise in using precision metrology instruments for inspections.

•\tStrong problem-solving skills to resolve machining or assembly issues, with effective communication abilities to collaborate with engineers and production personnel.

•\tBasic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel) and experience with Machine Control Programming.
