Job Description:

Job Description:

Airbus Netherlands B.V. is looking for a Thermal-Mechanical Engineer to join our Design & Analysis Team based in Leiden, The Netherlands. The ideal candidate will have experience in thermal and mechanical modeling, heat transfer and mechanical loads analysis to ensure the success of our advanced space products.

Company description:

Airbus Netherlands makes a vital contribution to the international Space industry in the current operational areas of Solar Arrays, Launcher Structures, and Instruments & Systems. In these areas we belong to the world top and seek to achieve the same level with future products and services. We want to be seen as a reliable partner that contributes to the success of our clients’ missions in a solution-driven and targeted manner. Airbus Netherlands B.V. designs and builds structures for European launchers serving the commercial and institutional satellite markets. The combination of our long heritage and continually expanding expertise have equipped us with the capability to meet the ever-developing demands in this field. The company also plays a crucial role on a variety of missions funded by ESA, NASA and commercial institutions, designing and developing Solar Arrays used to power up satellites and their payloads.

You will be part of the Design&Analysis Engineering team that supports the thermal and mechanical analysis and verification of our complex structures for the Ariane 6 launcher and for our Solar Arrays. You will be working in close collaboration with the Lead and Systems Engineers, the Design Office, the Material & Process department, our Assembly & Integration Team as well, of course, as fellow mechanical and thermal engineers.

Our Engineers have the privilege of working on complex products at the forefront of aerospace technology. We welcome those who are interested in joining our team effort to shape the present and future of Airbus Netherlands products!!!

Your challenges/tasks:

  • Conduct thermal analysis, including mainly radiative and conductive heat transfer simulations, using Software such as Thermal Desktop, ESATAN-TMS, Thermica.

  • Provide support in performing thermal vacuum, thermal balance, and environmental testing to validate design and modeling.

  • Understanding of lightweight metallic structural design and the behavior of structures subjected to thermo-mechanical loading.

  • Finite element modeling and analysis of Airbus Netherlands B.V. Space products, in particular lightweight structures of the Ariane 6 launcher. This shall be performed with FEMAP and NASTRAN.

  • Model and analyze the performance of structural components and assemblies which are optimized in terms of mass, cost and production / assembly requirements while highest safety of the Product is assured using appropriate Design tools.

  • Collaborate with systems, structural, and design engineers to integrate thermal requirements into product design.

  • Develop and document thermal models, trade studies, and performance assessments to optimize thermal performance.

  • Contribute to the selection of thermal materials, coatings and insulation for space applications.

  • Support mission operations by analyzing thermal system performance in orbit.

  • If the candidate also has mechanical engineering background (nice to have), finite element modeling and analysis of Airbus Netherlands B.V. Space products. This shall be performed with FEMAP and NASTRAN.

  • If the candidate also has mechanical engineering background (nice to have), model and analyze the performance of structural components and assemblies which are optimized in terms of mass, cost and production / assembly requirements while highest safety of the Product is assured using appropriate Design tools. Ensure that final design can bear mechanical stresses and satisfies the required stiffness and fracture control requirements.

  • Effective reporting of the engineering work in technical documents that satisfy the needs of the configuration control, design reviews, the treatment of NCR’s during production, enquiries from the customers and act as an efficient spring-board for future developments.

Profile of our ideal candidate:

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.

  • Capable of working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment both independently and collectively.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as thermal engineer, preferably in the aerospace / space sector.

  • Nice-to-have; 2 years of experience in thermal modeling and analysis software (e.g. ThermalDesktop and ESATAN-TMS, Thermica). Nevertheless, also candidates who have completed an internship or thesis in the field will be considered.

  • Strong understanding of radiative, conductive, and convective heat transfer principles.

  • Familiarity with NASA, ESA, or commercial space thermal and mechanical engineering standards.

  • Knowledge of the Finite Element Method and Analysis for structures.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, & PowerPoint) required.

  • Nice-to-have; knowledge of Python coding

  • Nice-to-have; knowledge of MSC Nastran Implicit Non-Linear (SOL 400) Analysis.

  • Nice-to-have; experience with thermal vacuum chamber testing and data analysis.

  • Nice-to-have; previously accumulated knowledge of space qualified thermal materials (MLI, coatings, phase change materials, heat pipes, etc).

  • Nice-to-have; experience working with Google Suite (GMail, Docs, Sheets, Slides).

  • Residency in the Netherlands.
