General

This is a full-time, FLSA exempt position that reports to the President, COO, and Accountable Executive. The Director of Safety must meet the requirements of FAA 14 CFR 119.65. The individual in this position is primarily responsible for overseeing the airline’s safe operations for both its employees and members. They will take a proactive approach in performing their duties and responsibilities, keeping the President, COO, and Accountable Executive continuously informed of any concerns that may affect the safety or security of the airline. The Director of Safety is a key safety role, ensuring that all Eastern Airlines personnel, processes, and procedures promote safety, security, quality, and regulatory compliance across all operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the operation of the airlines Safety Management System (SMS) program and report to the President, COO, and Accountable Executive on its implementation, operation, and all matters that may adversely affect the airworthiness of aircraft or the efficiency of technical operations personnel.
  • Oversee the Company’s Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) program.
  • Oversee the Company’s Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP)
  • Manage and direct the Company’s efforts to gain the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification.
  • Implement programs, policies, or procedures that ensure all Company aircraft are maintained in a safe, airworthy condition and in accordance with applicable Federal Aviation Administration regulations.
  • Investigate safety reports, incidents, and accidents. Determine root causal factors, develop recommended policies, programs, or procedures to mitigate future occurrences.
  • Develop, implement, and administer training programs related to safety and quality assurance objectives.
  • Strengthen and build out the Company’s overall Safety Department.
  • Oversee additional safety programs, including the Emergency Response, Internal Evaluation Program (IEP), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Hazardous Materials Program (HAZMAT), and Fatigue Risk Management Program (FRMP).
  • Coordinate with Technical Publications personnel to ensure relevant company manuals required by 14 CFR are current, available, and updated, including appropriate policies, procedures, or directives related to the health and safety of the airline.
  • Conduct periodic audits designed to improve the safety and quality of the airline’s operations, meet with relevant personnel to communicate audit results, and suggest improvements.
  • May be called upon to liaise with the local FAA Certificate Management Office (CMO), OSHA, NTSB, DoD, or other regulatory agencies as directed by the President, COO, and Accountable Executive pertaining to areas of function and responsibility.
  • Develop and administer budgets to ensure necessary resources are provided to support safety-related functions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the President, COO, and Accountable Executive.

Qualification Requirements

  • Extensive operational experience and professional qualifications in Aviation are required. This includes the knowledge and understanding of the following:
    • A. Aviation safety programs
    • B. Aviation safety standards
    • C. Safe aviation operating practices
  • Established professional credentials are required, which may include the following:
    • A. FAA Commercial Pilot or Airline Transport Pilot Certificate
    • B. FAA Mechanic Certificate
    • C. FAA Aircraft Dispatcher Certificate
  • Established professional qualifications are required. This experience may include any combination of the following, with a total of at least 3 years of experience.
    • A. Experience in a supervisory position with Part 121 or a scheduled Part 135 certificate holder.
    • B. Experience in a position comparable to A. above in U.S. Military Aviation Operations
    • C. Experience in a supervisory position with a government department, board, or agency that deals directly with aviation matters.
    • D. Experience in a supervisory position with a part 91 or 125 operations/aviation department
    • E. One year of experience may be listed if the candidate has completed a degree in higher education relating to aviation safety.
  • Ability to multitask and work under pressure in a dynamic environment
  • Must exercise good judgement
  • Travel will be required
  • Must pass a two (2) year drug and alcohol background check, pre-employment drug test, and criminal history records check (CHRC).
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
