The Director, Ground Safety and Compliance will be responsible for the quality of employee health and ground safety compliance with organization-wide direction, development, and implementation of safety initiatives focused on safety and compliance within the Airport and Tech Ops operation. This role interacts with frontline and leadership operational personnel, union safety representatives, senior managers, executive leadership, and department heads throughout the organization.

What youll do
  • Directs the implementation of policies, procedures, and programs designed to elicit compliance with corporate and governmental safety standards and regulations
  • Models and promotes an organizational culture that fosters safety practices through effective leadership
  • Directs a comprehensive oversight plan for establishment and compliance to policies, procedures and programs that result in the reduction of team member in juries and aircraft ground damage.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, budget, staffing, training, equipment, communications, and other resources to achieve departmental and corporate goals
  • Provides strategic direction of Corporate Safety & Compliance through clearly established and communicated goals and objectives
  • Partners with other departments as well as union representatives to establish processes that result in the continuous improvement of safety
  • Investigates and reports on accidents/incidents and makes recommendations to preclude a recurrence.
  • Advises company representatives and executive management of the status of significant safety issues
  • Participates in AA Safety Management Data Groups and Operations Standards Boards
  • Contributes to American Airlines’ industry leadership by representing the company at conferences, including participation in panels, networking, and sharing industry insights
All youll need for success

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Master’s degree in relevant studies, such as Safety, Engineering, Aviation, or equivalent work experience/training
  • 7 years of leadership experience managing other individuals
  • 5 years of experience in the airline industry with at least 3 years of safety program management
  • Aircraft accident investigation training and experience
  • Experience interfacing with FAA, government agencies, labor, and inter-department communications
  • Ability and willingness to travel as necessary
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and work a varied schedule

Skills, Licenses & Certifications

  • Ability and willingness to remain current with industry practices and developments
  • Mentoring and relationship building skills with ability to manage group and interpersonal conflict situations
  • Excellent communication skills (presentation, interpersonal, and written), with ability to handle complex topics comfortably and to interact effectively with all levels within the organization
  • Ability to effectively advocate and communicate on behalf of American Airlines with all levels of external officials
  • Ability to build and facilitate long-term relationships at all levels, both internally and externally
  • Ability to delegate effectively and handle multiple responsibilities, manage available resources, make timely decisions, and understand the impact of those decisions on others
  • Ability to demonstrate time management, multi-tasking, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrates the highest level of ethics and integrity
