Team Structure Overview
At BDUK, the Training Services function supports the analysis, design and development, delivery and assurance of world-class learning and compelling training solutions that are of vital importance to our company, and to the defence and security of our customers.
Training Services are looking to hire an experienced editor to join us in providing specialist courseware design and development services to support our defence and commercial portfolio of Boeing platforms and services.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the training and multimedia solutions managers our courseware editors are responsible for:
- The provision of editorial best practices that meet the highest technical and quality standards, regulatory requirements and company policies and processes embracing first-time quality as a way of life.
- Working with the lead editor and other editors to efficiently edit custom technical courseware to the highest standard to ensure it adheres to the style guide and is free from spelling and grammatical errors.
- Contributing to the analysis and evaluation of the team’s editorial needs to determine the appropriate methodologies and establishing the editorial aspects of training design and development projects.
- Supporting the lead editor to coach, train and provide one-to-one support to the team, communicating clearly to convey information about editorial style and quality.
- Contributing to the maintenance and twice-yearly updates of the style guide.
- Discovering new opportunities and solutions for problems by looking beyond current practice and using innovative thinking to determine new editorial strategies, methods and technologies. Research new tools for both internal and external customers, contributing to process improvements.
- Identifying and correcting conditions and behaviours that affect employee, public and customer safety; upholding safety standards; and demonstrating a proactive safety culture.
The Person ‒ Required Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience as an editorial professional including:
- Exceptional editorial skills, including meticulous attention to detail for identifying grammatical errors and deviations from the internal style guide.
- Training from a reputable provider, such as CIEP, PTC. Or evidenced formal in-house training or certification.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent time management skills to be able to edit content accurately and to stringent deadlines.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, including remotely.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in an editorial role.
- Excellent IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and Word templates, and experience using a content management system.
- Experience of editing American English content, and for those who have English as a second language.
- A full UK driving (Cat B) licence and be able to travel to various industry and customer sites throughout the UK.
- Intermediate or above, membership of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).
- The ability to obtain UK Security Clearance
In addition, the following are desirable but not essential:
- A degree in English or related field, and/or equivalent professional editorial qualifications.
- Previous experience of editing technical content.
- Knowledge of Plain English.
