PURPOSE:

Work as general repairman, doing variety of maintenance jobs on all machinery, equipment, and buildings in the Grafton Plant under direction of Foreman, or Leader Does Millwright work.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Receive job assignments from Foreman or Leader.
  • Repair and maintain all machinery and equipment in Grafton in mechanical and hydraulic aspects of job under direction of Foreman, or Leader.
  • Assist in installing and setting up machinery, equipment, and facilities.
  • Rebuild hydraulic pumps, fluid drive units, gear boxes and a variety of mechanical and hydraulic units under directions of Foreman, or Leader.
  • Assist in rebuilding machinery and equipment.
  • Work as pump room mechanic if needed.
  • Use precision instruments and tools such as levels, micrometers, calipers, etc.
  • Operate saws, sanders, drills, and other simple machines for maintenance purposes.
  • Serve as member of Wyman-Gordon Fire Department.
  • Perform any other work within and below the classification as required by supervision.
  • Carry out clean-up duties in all work areas as directed.

KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING:

Requires up to 18 months of on-the-job training or equivalent. Requires some mechanical background, familiarity with hydraulics. Reads blueprints, uses precision instruments on occasion, and operates saws, sanders, drills, and other maintenance power tools.

SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires use of judgment and ability to make decisions in analyzing malfunction of equipment and making necessary repairs.
  • Will work under direction of Repairman I in more complicated jobs.
  • Frequent use of easily developed physical skills in using variety of maintenance hand and power tools.
  • Occasional use of precision instruments to measure parts and to level and align machinery.
  • Some care required to avoid damage to materials where the value of damage would be small.
  • Care required in repairing machinery and equipment to avoid damage where repair costs would be significant.
  • Must exercise care in repairing machinery and equipment to prevent downtime of significant value.
  • Inattention or carelessness in working on equipment or operating overhead crane of Clarktor could cause temporarily disabling injury to others.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND POSSIBLE HAZARDS:

  • Frequent physical effort required.
  • Some jobs such as repacking of presses requires heavy work.
  • Climbs ladders and high structures.
  • Frequent lifting.
  • Some lifting in doing variety of repair jobs.
  • Some tools such as impact wrenches are heavy.
  • Works in all parts of plant, including Forge Shop.
  • Frequent exposure to noise, dirt, and dust.
  • Generally, works in normal temperatures but some work on furnaces or overhead doors or buildings.
  • Press works very greasy.
  • Frequent exposure to temporarily disabling injuries when working on presses or climbing on high structures and to cranes.
  • Constant exposure to minor injuries.
