The position is located within the Security and Hazardous Materials Safety (ASH) organization and may be assigned to a geographical location under the purview of the Office of Investigations & Professional Responsibility (AXI). The mission of ASH is to ensure aviation safety, support national security, and promote an efficient airspace system through the development and administration of policies and programs.

Duties

The incumbent serves as a Writer-Editor within the Policy and Support Division. The incumbent will perform multiple and varying assignments under the limited direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced professional. Acts as an individual contributor and/or member of a team and may perform some leadership functions for small projects/programs or other work activities. Applies experience and advanced knowledge of writing and editing principles to analyze, select, and organize information.

Assignments may require knowledge and experience working across functional and/or organizational lines. The Writer-Editor supports AXI by providing writing, editing, and project management of a large number and a wide variety of documents from across the organization. Typical duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Conducts research using a variety of sources to collect information used as groundwork in generating documents. Gathers necessary information from subject matter experts (SME), team leads, and/or management officials. Works independently to prepare, write, edit, research, and develop and/or process the following: training aides, briefing materials, correspondence, documents and papers, ensuring that accurate, appropriately concise, and timely information is available to a variety of audiences. Ensures materials and work products are presented in an interesting, informative, clear, accurate, and convincing manner to the targeted audience while adhering to plain-language and performance-based principles in the development of policy and other documents in accordance with the branding and writing standards. Oversees the timely processing of these documents by tracking, monitoring, and reporting on their progress.

Possesses publishing concepts, practices, standards, and technologies to gather data and check the accuracy of information by analyzing findings of investigations and interviews, and researching literature, qualitative and quantitative data, safety data, incident reports, polices, procedures, rules, and regulations. Analyzes, selects, and organizes the information to be presented taking into account: (1) agency policy, (2) agency, medium, and style requirements, (3) consistency with other information presented by the agency, and (4) the level of knowledge and expected reaction of the intended audience.

Demonstrates considerable independence in planning time and helping a manager, project/program manager, and/or team leader to plan and use assigned resources to accomplish projects/programs/activities. May identify and request additional resources, as needed. Resolves most problems and work issues without the assistance of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced professional.

Refers to managers and professionals who are more experienced problems that require their attention. May help them develop and recommend solutions. Work is reviewed periodically, typically at major milestones and at completion, for policy compliance and alignment with the requirements of projects and/or other work activities.

Performs other duties as assigned.

To qualify for this position you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to FV-G / FG/GS-10/11. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Specialized experience includes: Experience writing or editing publications, policies, and procedures. Experience writing and editing material drafted by others using established practices, standards, and guidance including application of technical communications concepts. Experience acquiring and presenting information through independent reading, interviews with subject-matter experts, and observations.
